How to Use Twitter Spaces to Grow Your Online Brand

Do you remember when Clubhouse first launched and everyone was so excited about it? I do. But, I also remember being annoyed and feeling like I was being left out of the cool kids club because I used Android instead of IOS. Apparently I wasn’t the only person feeling this way. So, when Twitter launched Twitter Spaces I was incredibly excited about to use this new resource. I began observing how other creators were incorporating Twitter Spaces into growing their online brands and helping to position themselves as authorities in their spaces.

What I love about Twitter spaces is that you don’t have to leave Twitter in order to use this tool. There is a simplicity of use that makes it ideal for both the creators and their communities and for other people that they would like to serve as well. If you’re wondering how to leverage Twitter spaces effectively in order to grow your brand here are a few tips on what to do and what to consider.

How to Prepare for Your Twitter Space

Before hosting your Twitter space there are a few actions that you need to take in order to make sure that the space does what it’s supposed to do.

  • Be clear about the purpose-This clarity of purpose is key to attracting listeners and guides the conversation that you will have.
  • Know what you would like the audience to leave with
    • Run of show sheet and share it with your guest(s) so that they know what to expect.
    • What’s the end goal for your audience? Are you empowering them? Sharing a resource? Or sharing motivation and encouragement?
  • Understand the tech
    • Speak into your microphone!
    • Use headphones
    • Tell your guests to record from a quiet space with headphones-I’ve noticed a lot of guests recording in problematic spaces.
    • Make sure your internet speed is high
    • Create a space framework so that you’re not rambling for an hour-This is the run of show sheet that I was talking about.
    • Have another guest that is co-hosting your space
    • Record the space so that people can listen to the space later
    • Explain the tech to your co-hosts and the listeners. One key aspect is that if they join in via their cell phone they will be able to ask questions, etc. vs. if they join via laptop
  • Create a schedule that you can stick with. My current goal is to host at minimum one Twitter space a week on Mondays at 2:00 pm MTN or 4:00 pm EST
  • Be clear about when the space will happen. Note: The time shown adjusts to the time zone of each user. BUT, in your marketing collateral share an example of the following:
    • “Join us during our upcoming Twitter space from 4:00 pm MTN/6:00 pm EST” you want to show your personal time zone and EST (standard) so that attendees have a clear idea of when the space is happening.
  • Try to avoid scheduling during other content creator’s Twitter space times.
  • Show up on time.

How to Host a Twitter Space

It’s pretty straightforward to host a Twitter space. But, there are some key actions to take before you hit start.

  • Create a searchable title that makes it clear what you’re going to discuss-This is also important for Twitter’s SEO algorithm.
  • Schedule it a minimum of 3 days ahead-People are busy and need time to plan.
  • Tell people about your space. Do some marketing around it.
  • Direct your guests to take an action. No more than 2 actions an episode. Actions could be:
    • Opt-in to a tool that you have* always
    • Check out your course
    • Go to your website
    • Follow you
    • The actions depend on what your end goal is
  • Always share an opt-in-allowing your listeners to leave with something
  • Make it easy for people to contact you.

How to Be a Guest on a Twitter Space

  • Coordinate a space-If there’s a topic that you would like to be a guest on and discuss, coordinate a space with a friend or reach out to someone who is looking for guests to talk about the topic you’re an expert on.
  • Be a listener on a space and request to speak when they ask for questions or ideas-always be CLEAR, CONCISE and Quick. I literally type out my thoughts when listening to the conversation so I make comments with impact, don’t ramble and contribute in a positive way.

How to Repackage Your Twitter Space

There are a few ways that you can repackage the content that you’ve recorded via your Twitter space.

  • Record your content prior to recording the space
  • Go to your Settings feature in Twitter to access your recording
  • Click on the “Your account” link (this is what I did on my phone)
  • Download an archive of your data

I know some people who edit their space or take impactful audio snippets from their show.

Mistakes that I’ve Noticed

  • Rambling-Avoid rambling when asking questions. Also, avoid rambling when you’re the host. Keep things focused and keep things moving.
  • Talking with your hosts and accidentally shutting your listeners out of the conversation. This happens often in podcasts as well.
  • Bad audio that could be avoided-Don’t record in a noisy space
  • Not giving listeners the opportunity to ask questions-No Q&A time. They might not ask questions, but allocate some time towards it.
  • Not communicating timing. “We’re going to set 15 minutes aside for Q&A” etc.
  • Spaces that are way too long or way too short. You’ll have to figure out what the “sweet spot” is for each space because each space has a different vibe.

Caution!

Be aware of listeners who may be helpful but might accidentally overtake your space or share a resource or tool that is not in alignment with your brand. Be aware of how you would address this when (not if) this comes up.

What to Do During and After the Twitter Space

  • Share the space to help grow its reach
  • Follow like-minded or complimentary content folks on Twitter. You can do while you listen to the conversation.
  • Avoid pitching to be on someone’s podcast, video series, etc. immediately after a space. Make sure that the person is a good fit for your brand and vice versa. Be intentional around your pitches and be clear about their platform and the content and audience that they’re in front of. Just because someone is on a Travel space doesn’t mean that they are primarily in the travel space. They could have a secondary pillar of content or interest which put them in front of you
  • Screenshot positive tweets about your Twitter space and the content that you shared.

Final Thoughts

If you’re thinking about testing out hosting a regular Twitter space-do! I also think it’s a great way for multi-passionate content creators to share their expertise in different areas of interest. I love that Twitter Spaces captures users where they’re already engaging and stays true to the essence of Twitter. You can connect with others in the moment.
