Show Notes

  • One of the weirdest things that I discovered about goal setting for my business is that there is a point where you have to let go and be open to the unexpected. Basically, you can’t plan your way towards every achievement. There’s a percentage of magical alchemy that occurs when you’re positioning your brand out there in the world. Yep, that’s pretty woo woo.
  • For the other goals such as winning awards, earning more, growing social media, working with brands, etc. There are action steps that you can take to achieve those goals. So, I thought I would share some strategies that you may consider using.
  • First and foremost-be careful of the number of goals that you’re setting in your business. There are 4 business quarters during the year. You may want to break down your goals based on quarters or the time of year you think it would be easiest to achieve.
  • Understanding your work flow and demand for your services or content can help you make these timing decisions. Here’s an example: Financial content and heath related content and goals are huge during January and February when the New Year begins. So, it may make sense to set up the structure to achieve those goals in the quarter (or, quarters) prior to that time.
  • Earn More-Spend some time breaking down the steps that you would take to achieve the goal. If earning more is what you’re focused on that may look like the following:
    • Breaking down how many projects, clients, course sales, Brand collaborations, book sales, affiliate earnings, or podcast sponsorships you need to make in order to hit your earnings goals.
    • Knowing your numbers will make your supporting marketing actions much easier to focus on.
    • Reviewing your numbers at the end of each month. There is a saying “What isn’t measured, doesn’t grow” reviewing your figures will help you with this goal.
  • Winning awards in your space-At the beginning of the year, if winning awards is a goal that you would like to achieve here are a few action steps to take.
    • Write down the name of the actual award(s) you would like to win.
    • Figure out when those organizations open up nominations for those awards.
    • Create award winning content that helps others first and foremost (that could mean entertain, educate, or inspire depending on the space that you’re in) Share your content!
    • NOMINATE YOURSELF and get people to support your nomination. That means, get people to vote for you.
    • This is an example of an ongoing series of actions that you would take in order to hopefully achieve your goal.
  • Becoming known as an expert in your space. It’s up to you to define what that looks like. But, steps that you could take to achieve this goal could include the following:
    • Creating a space that let’s you share your expertise and position you as an expert. Here are a few examples:
      • Create a podcast and KEEP IT SIMPLE. Maybe you share an episode every other week sharing expertise in your space.
      • Design and Host a YouTube series. Don’t worry about editing it. Just KEEP IT SIMPLE and get it done.
      • Host Twitter Spaces or Clubhouse Events, once or twice a month. But, create a schedule and stick to it.
      • Write an ebook-I run a course called “Make Money with Ebooks” where I help non-fiction and fiction authors with the book writing process. Use that book as a sponsor of your Twitter Space/Podcast/or YouTube series.
      • Be THE GUEST-on other people’s podcast, YouTube series, etc. Always lead with the host’s audience in mind vs. what you’re hoping to gain from being a guest.
      • Be active on TikTok but don’t overthink it and have FUN.

5 Final Tips

Before you get started on planning your year, I’d like to leave you with a some final tips.

  • Tip #1Go with the flow. This one will feel counterintuitive to everything that I just shared with you. You’re setting up the foundation to achieve your goals. Some goals will happen on different timing than what you’re hoping for.
  • Tip #2Share your goals-You may be sharing with people who can help you achieve your goal faster. I’ve mentioned things in passing and other people that I least expected reached out to me and helped me achieve my goal faster.
  • Tip #3Be consistent-By this what I mean is be consistent as a human, how you treat people and how you show up on your platform. People should experience you the same way in person and online.
  • Tip #4-Share Opportunities-If you’ve done your numbers, then you shouldn’t be uncomfortable sharing opportunities with other folks that you know. The Law of Reciprocity is REAL! This is an abundance mindset action that will attract opportunities to you.
  • Tip #5Stay Connected-Yes, we’re still dealing with a Global Pandemic. But, there are tons of ways to connect with people that can be uplifted and elevated by your brand and expertise. Also, there are a ridiculous number of actions you can take to market your brand authentically. I’m going to share a few below:
    • Follow editors and freelance writers on Twitter and other online platforms. They are always looking for resources, ideas and connections. They also share opportunities to work on projects.
    • Join or create a Mastermind group. I belong to 3 groups that basically function as Masterminds. These groups are a great way to share your goals, get feedback and encouragement and support as you work towards your goals.
