How to Grow Your Brand with Twitter Spaces (As a Listener)

The people who know me personally aren’t shocked to find out that I love Twitter spaces. In fact, I increasingly feel that Twitter Spaces is the one thing that Elno (yes, that’s how I refer to him) hasn’t ruined on Twitter. For those of you who remember Clubhouse, Twitter Spaces is basically exactly the same thing as Clubhouse.

What are Twitter Spaces?

Twitter users can host unique conversations that are discoverable by users across the platform. There are four types of participants in a Twitter Space:

  • Hosts-The person or persons who’ve created and designed the space.

  • Speakers-Folks who speak during the space. They could be listeners who request to speak or are previously designated speakers that may have been part of a panel or were a part of designing the Space.

  • Listeners-People who listen to the space but don’t participate beyond listening.

  • Advocate-Folks who share the space. They’re people who notice the space happening and retweet it even if they aren’t participating in it.

Twitter Spaces are currently an audio forward experience. You listen to other people who are speaking in the moment about the designated topic of the space.

Why Are Twitter Spaces So Awesome

What I love about Twitter Spaces is the following:

  • The organic reach with people who are outside of your current followers/community/etc who may have similar interests. The scope of reach is amazing. You can grow your brand across national boarders.

  • People can hear your voice-Similar to podcasting, having your voice direct into the ears of your ideal community members, YouTube subscribers, newsletter subscribers is HUGE. You can build trust much faster via the platform.

  • List building potential-If you’ve set up a system to build up either your newsletter, email list, or both-the potential to quickly build your list is huge. It’s often said that “The money is in the list”

  • Social proof-Twitter spaces have helped participants grow their social proof and follower counts

  • Community building-Growing an online business can often feel very overwhelming and at times lonely. Twitter Spaces are a wonderful way to build community organically.

  • Sales-Let’s be clear, you can make a lot of money leveraging Twitter Spaces. By selling within the space even though most sales happen after spaces as people make their way into your funnel.

  • Meet people you otherwise wouldn’t meet-Cardi B hosts Twitter Spaces from time to time.

Preparations to Take Before Your Attending Next Space

There are a few things that you should do before you attend your next space.

  • Look at your Twitter profile header-This especially important if you’re building an online business. Are the following things clear:
    • Who you are and what you do?
    • Where to find what you do
    • What action a person looking at your profile should take next.
    • If those things aren’t clear-update your header. Not sure if they aren’t clear, do a quick survey of people who you would likely serve with your content or services.
    • Check your profile hyperlink-Does it go to where you want people to go within your platform?
      • A resource
      • Video
      • Podcast episode

  • Set aside some time-Ideally, you’ve set aside time to really participate in a space. You can multitask but I would caution you about the type of multitasking that you’re doing. Often I will walk while listening to a space, take the train or hike.

  • What will you say? If you speak, what is it that you would like to say and share?

7 Tips to Follow

There are some best practices that you can embrace in order to really optimize your time in Twitter Spaces.

Tip #1-Become a regular-Don’t pop into a billion different spaces. say “yes” to a small curated number of Spaces that make sense for your goals, focus and interest.

Tip #2-Listen with intention-There are a number of spaces that I participate in where I don’t say anything or limit my commenting. It can be hard because I love to talk but I don’t need to participate in everything.

Tip #3-Be patient and kind-Sometimes there are technical glitches, people pausing, etc. Avoid cutting people off while they’re speaking and avoid taking over the conversation.

Tip #4-Multitask carefully-The biggest difference between a Livestream, Podcast or a Space is how the listeners may end up participating in the conversation.

Tip #5Use emojis and react to the different points that people are making. Whether you agree or disagree with the points people are making.

Tip #6-Get comfortable with disagreeing. I think that the moment in time we’re in can make disagreements or different viewpoints. For some people disagreeing can feel very unnerving, personal and scary. It gets easier to do over time.

Tip #7-Read the room-Just like when you’re in real life it’s important to “read the room.” Examples of what I mean:

  • Don’t cuss if no one else is LOL!

  • Awkward cultural references. Seriously, if you’re not 100% sure that the cultural reference you’re about to make will make sense-avoid it. Just listened to a painful one during Twitter Space today.

  • Don’t reference illicit drugs, etc. If no one else is.

  • Raise your hand in order to speak.

Bonus Tip: Keep your comments tight and BRIEF

I’m working on this post while participating in a Twitter Space and there’s nothing worse than long-winded comments. If you’re not sure if you can keep your comments brief do the following

  • Write your comments out or type them out-It’s likely that it may take some time to be brought up to speak. Tighten up your comments so that they are impactful, clear and concise. They will resonate more with the audience and keep things flowing.

Some Things to Watch Out For

Twitter Spaces are a great way to grow your brand but I do want to share a word of caution before you embrace this strategy.

  • Manage your time-It can become a huge time suck. I typically multi-task when I’m listening to or participating in a space.
    • Riding my stationary bike
    • Walking
    • Typing out a post

  • Set some systems up-For the most part I don’t participate in Twitter Spaces from Thursday-Sunday. I have other things that I want to do.

  • Is it in alignment-I only sign up for Spaces that are in alignment with my brand and goals. If it’s random, I’m ignoring it.

  • Does the host foster a safe space-If it’s not a space that is comfortable to be in, I’m out.
