3 Lessons from The Museum for Black Girls for Digital Entrepreneurs

One of my favorite things to experience is visiting and enjoying unique spaces that people have dreamed up that otherwise wouldn’t be created. Digital Entrepreneurs, in particular, are leading the charge in curating beautifully unique spaces across the United States. I wanted to briefly share one of my favorite spaces that happens to be in my hometown of Denver, Colorado. Here are TK lessons from the Museum for Black Girls for Digital Entrepreneurs. Listen up.

Show Notes

This episode is dedicated to the creator who is waiting for the perfect time to do the thing that they dream of. Or, the Type A perfectionist who keeps trying to design the most perfect experience ever that they’ve thought about for the past 3 years and still haven’t launched.

  • Lesson #1-Start where you’re at-I’ll never forget hearing about the Museum for Black Girls opening up. I made my way across town to a large white house off of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd or was it Bruce Randolph Ave? Anyway, I was a little confused when I arrived and I was one of the first people there. The founder, a friend and the founder’s daughter were still working on getting the displays together and her daughter ended up giving me my initial tour. She was around 8 or 9 years old. It was a truly beautiful experience. I loved it and understood the vision. I even ended up recording a podcast with the co-founders during COVID but COVID being COVID…ended the initial run of the museum. Also, all of this is based on my somewhat faulty memory of that time. So, if this happened in 2021 it is what it is.

  • Lesson #2-Rework the Vision-The Museum for Black Girls eventually opened up for a time in Houston as well as in Washington D.C. I remember thinking, wow, this is so cool that this amazing experience dreamed of in an expected town has made its way to Chocolate City and many people were completely unaware of its origin story. They just were excited about and resonated with the vision of the experience. For Black women to be seen in all of our lived moments.

  • Lesson #3-Your Vision Will Naturally Uplevel-What do I mean by this? You know those podcasters who want to start their podcast in the most perfect way possible, pay too much money on gear and then stop recording after 5 episodes? Then there’s the person who just starts, they invest what they can and then fall in love with the what they’re curating. Then as it becomes clearer to them that they will continue working on and growing their project, they will naturally seek out the resources needed to improve the project. Currently, The Museum for Black Girls is housed in the Denver Pavilions a mini-mall located in downtown Denver on 16th Street, in what is considered the heart of the city. Black women from all over make it a point when visiting town to experience the museum. It hosts wine and yoga nights and other fun experiences. In fact, I was there a few weeks ago for the premier of Jordan Peele’s
