How to Build in Surprise and Delight Into Your Online Business FOR YOU

Listen to the Episode

Recently I wrote a post about building “Surprise and Delight” into your brand for the community members that you serve. I’m talking about special unexpected treats designed to spoil and show your community members that they are appreciated and seen by you. As content creators I’ve noticed that we’re often last on our list. We’re so busy building our business, producing content and doing all the things that we forget to treat ourselves. We also often accidentally build online businesses with echos of the toxic corporate culture that we left behind. If you’re not sure what “Surprise and Delight” could look like in your business-I’ve got you covered.

Treat Yo Self!

It’s absolutely possible to build treats into you how you experience working on your business. I noticed pretty quickly that I wouldn’t be able to sustain my workload if I didn’t enjoy what I was doing. Or, if it felt like everything was a grind and super stressful. Especially because building a healthy and sustainable business can take a little longer than you may expect.

These Treats Might Cost Money

Some worthwhile treats you’ll have to spend some cash on. Here are a few of my favorites

  • Have a “Mother’s Helper” come over at least once a month (I was a Mother’s Helper in Paris) Basically, I hung out with the kiddo I was in charge of while the mom was in the house. It was great for everyone involved. Especially, if you’re nervous about leaving your kids. The Mother’s Helper is the primary point person unless something serious comes up.

  • Have someone come in and do your heavy cleaning-If my place was 100 feet bigger this would be the first thing I would pay for.

  • Design Special Merchandise That’s Just for You

  • Use ResortPass-This is one of my absolute favorite ways that I like to treat myself. ResortPass allows users to book hotel gyms/spas or even rooms to enjoy typically during the day. The last time I did this I booked a day at a hotel that has a rooftop hot tub and a view of the entire city of Denver and the mountains. That was an incredible day.

  • Get physical-Take a yoga, dance or other class that you may be interested in.

  • Book a Retreat-I’m working on this post during a retreat on the border of Oregon/Washington State.

  • Staycation-Same thing as ResortPass but you’re (hopefully) staying overnight somewhere cool

  • Attend a Special Training and learn a new skill (in or out-of-state)

  • Create a special savings goal for the end of the year for a yet to be decided upon treat

  • Build out paid leave-This one is HUGE. Save money every week so that you can take a month a week, several weeks or even months off from actively working on your brand.

  • Do something regularly that has absolutely NOTHING to do with work, building a brand, etc.
    • Explore an interest that you wouldn’t have had time for before
    • Attend dance class
    • Acting classes
    • Makers classes-Learn how to make random stuff
    • Collect stickers

Building and growing an online business/brand can be hard. Don’t forget to treat yourself along the way.
